MOZART Symphony No.29
“Upshaw’s performances are the stuff of legend.”  LOS ANGELES TIMES, 2007
Soprano Dawn Upshaw has established an international reputation as her generation’s pre-eminent performer of the most exciting vocal music from the Baroque to today. Recently awarded the MacArthur Foundation’s ‘Genius Grant’ and the winner of four Grammy Awards, Upshaw is without doubt “one of the most consequential performers of our time” (LA Times). Upshaw will perform repertoire that demonstrates the warmth, range, intelligence and dramatic flair for which she is renowned.
Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante is a conversation between friends, in this case, Richard Tognetti and Christopher Moore. It features virtuosic interplay of violin and viola in the majestic first movement, a tragic aria in the second and ends with a rousing dance.
The eighteen-year-old Mozart truly came of age as a symphonist with his 29th symphony, combining vigour (with its hunting horns), grace (in the elegant dignity of its minuet) and intimacy. The famous opening movement was featured in the film Amadeus, along with the Sinfonia Concertante.
